Background of Funfest
Funfest was established in 1979 by a committee of the Greater Hazleton Chamber of Commerce. It started as a community fair and parade, and in its history has grown to become the largest event of its kind in Luzerne County, attracting some 100,000 people to Downtown Hazleton each year.
Funfest remains a committee of the Hazleton Chamber. It boasts some 40 volunteer committee members, who plan the event throughout the year, then operate it during Funfest Weekend. Chamber staff oversee the planning.
Funfest Weekend is made up of many different activities of interest to all ages and tastes. There’s free entertainment at multiple venues, a classic car show, an arts, crafts and home party vendor show, a street fair, the CommUNITY Interfaith Service and of course, the giant Funfest Parade, featuring giant helium balloons. Funfest is a great place for nonprofit organizations to raise money for and share information about their events.
Funfest also has special activities just for kids, including the popular Touch-A-Truck event featuring a variety of emergency response vehicles, as well as seniors activites, including bingo. And when you come to Funfest, you pay NO admission and parking is free!
Funfest is a terrific way to end your summer. It is a family celebration, and it also serves as a fundraiser for many charitable organizations.
