PennDOT District IV Executive Richard Roman to speak at November 23 hybrid Red Carpet Breakfast

The Greater Hazleton Chamber is happy to announce this month’s hybrid Red Carpet Breakfast which will happen on November 23rd, 2021. Mr. Rich Roman is the District Executive for PENN DOT District IV which covers six county area in northeastern PA.

He will be speaking about current and upcoming projects in the district, including the tolling of bridges. Attendees will also have the opportunity for a question and answer session at the end of his presentation. The breakfast program is sponsored by H&K and will take place at Top of the Eighties, 3 Top of the Eighties Road, Hazleton 18202.

Job Fair for Dislocated DBi Workers Will Be Held Oct. 29

A job fair for dislocated DBi workers will be held this Friday, October 29, from 8:30 a.m. to 12:30 p.m. at the Hazleton LaunchBox, 15 West Broad Street in Downtown Hazleton.

More than 15 companies will be on hand to discuss their openings. Free parking is available in the city lot at 32 North Wyoming street, across from Frankie's Pizzeria.

Representatives from Unemployment Compensation, PA CareerLink, and the Greater Hazleton United Way
will be on site to answer questions.

Attendees are required to wear masks and follow all CDC guidelines.

Winners Announced for Greater Hazleton Chamber of Commerce Business & Community Awards

The Greater Hazleton Chamber of Commerce has announced the winners of their Annual 2021 Business and Community Awards. In an attempt to help promote October as “Chamber of Commerce” month, the Greater Hazleton Chamber of Commerce will hold a special awards luncheon, sponsored by Community Bank, NA, to recognize the winners of the awards. The luncheon will take place on Thursday, October 28th at 11:45 am at Edgewood in Drums. The cost of the luncheon is $25 per person. "Athena" Award Nomination Forms Available From Chamber

Nominations for the annual Greater Hazleton Chamber of Commerce/Lehigh Valley Hospital-Hazleton "Athena Award" are now being accepted.

The deadline to submit applications is Friday, October 8.

The award is presented annually to the "Businesswoman of the Year" in the Greater Hazleton Area. The presentation, which features a handsome bronze and crystal sculpture, is presented as part of the Chamber’s Awards luncheon on October 28th at Edgewood in the Pines and for the first time is being sponsored by Lehigh Valley Hospital Hazleton. “ Recognizing the business acumen , achievement and impact from the Greater Hazleton Chambers women members through the sponsorship of this prestigious award is another part of being a good partner in our community” noted Terry Purcell, President of Lehigh Valley Health Network Northwest Region.

The Chamber "Athena" award will be given to the businesswoman who has demonstrated the "highest level of professional accomplishment" and is based primarily on professional competency, achievement and dedication. The "Athena" award is an internationally recognized award through the Athena Foundation that recognizes professional and civic achievement across a variety of professions. It is meant as a meaningful recognition of women as an integral part of the Hazleton Area workplace.

Chancellor of Penn State Hazleton, Dr. Gary Lawler to Speak at September 29 Hybrid Red Carpet Breakfast

Chamber Seeking Candidates for Annual Business & Community Awards

The Greater Hazleton Chamber of Commerce is now seeking nominations for their 20th Annual Business & Community Awards. The awards are given each year in order to recognize individuals and businesses, which help to promote and support the Greater Hazleton Area.

Nominations are being accepted for: Small Business of the Year; Large Business of the Year, Rocco Colangelo Volunteer of the Year, Pride of Place, Healthy Workplace of the Year, Non-Profit of the Year and Young Entrepreneur of the Year.

A business or individual may be nominated for an award or they can nominate themselves. Once the nomination is received by the Chamber, the nominee will be notified and asked to complete an official application. The applications are reviewed and scored by a volunteer committee, and all winners will be recognized at a special luncheon program, sponsored by Community Bank, N.A., to be held on Thursday, October 28th at 11:45 am the Edgewood in Drums.

Funfest postponed until 2022

Placing the health and safety of the community first, and out of an abundance of caution due to the ongoing COVID-19 pandemic, the Greater Hazleton Chamber and Funfest Committee has decided to cancel the Funfest 2021 activities that were originally scheduled for Sunday, September 12.

Greater Hazleton Chamber of Commerce President Mary Malone said the Chamber board and Funfest Committee members were saddened to have to cancel Funfest again but that putting the safey of the Greater Hazleton community first was paramount in the decision.

“We have attempted to be flexible and responsive to the challenges that the pandemic has presented but decided that even a one-day event with a parade would be too much,” Malone said. “We have been in contact with our sponsors, vendors and parade participants as well as the dedicated volunteers who make this event happen each year."

Chamber board member and longtime Funfest volunteer Andy Piskel said, “ It is disappointing, but given the environment we felt it was the best strategy for the current situation and all concerned.”

Malone added that the Funfest Committee will immediately set its sights on September 2022 and finally bringing Funfest back to Downtown Hazleton.

 

Chamber Woman’s Committee Continues to Host Monthly Life Skills Programs for Young Women

The Greater Hazleton Chamber of Commerce Women’s Networking Committee created a brand new free monthly series for 2021 that is free for all young women, called “You Go Girl” Series: Life Skills for Young Women. This month’s session takes place this Thursday, August 26th at 3:30 pm and the topic is Interview Skills, being presented by Lori Kane from the Hazleton Careerlink.

 

The ‘You Go Girl’ series resulted from a committee discussion on how professional women can share their experiences with younger women in our community in order to help them develop important life skills”, explains Kim McNulty, Chamber Women’s Networking Committee Chair.

 

The series takes place once a month and the schedule for the remainder of the year is as follows: Thursday, September 30th @ 3:30 pm, Cooking in the Kitchen Basics with Donna Barna, Billig-Helmes Insurance; Thursday, October 28th @ 3:30 pm, Creating a Vision with Cathy Colangelo, Partners in Education; Thursday, November 18th @ 3:30 pm, Knitting for Beginners with Carole Shearer, Penn State Hazleton; Thursday, December 30th @ 3:30 pm, Career Counseling/Choosing a Path with Kaity Krasucki, Penn State Hazleton.

Chamber Golf Outing & On-Course Expo Set for August 19th Has Limited Space Available

Only a few openings remain for the 54th Annual Greater Hazleton Chamber of Commerce Golf Outing which will take place on Thursday, August 19th.  The shotgun start tournament is scheduled to take place at Blue Ridge Golf Club in Mountaintop at 11 am. Registration begins at 9:30 am.

Registration includes 18 holes of golf and a cart, gift for each golfer, prior to shotgun start coffee, donuts, bloody mary's and mimosas. On-course expo all day with businesses setup at the tees providing giveaways, food, drinks, snacks, games and more. An on-course hospitality tent with the famous ‘Chamber Chili Dogs", snacks, beer and drinks. After the round of golf there is a one-hour premium open bar and hors d' oeuvre reception followed by a full buffet dinner and awards program, where trophies will be given out for championship, first and second flight, men's longest drive, women's longest drive, closest to the pin and closest to the pin second shot on the green. A 50/50 raffle prize winner will be awarded and over prizes will also be given away.

Additional tournament events include three Hole in One Contest featuring a $5000 cash prize; a $5000 Putting Contest, Mulligans, "Lob a Grenade" game and a Pot of Gold Contest.

First Friday Arts in the Park Summer Concert Series continues August 6 with music by Nate Myers and the Aces

The Downtown Hazleton Alliance for Progress is partnering with local restaurants to offer picnic-style dining options during its FREE Arts in the Park summer concert series, which will take place in the new CAN DO Community Park on the corner of Broad and Laurel streets in conjunction with First Friday.

The next concert will be held this Friday, August 6, from 6-8 p.m. featuring music by Nate Myers and the Aces.

Each month, the Downtown Hazleton Alliance for Progress will partner with Hazleton restaurants to offer their very own take on their perfect picnic-style meal.This month, meal options will be provided by the Pines Eatery & Spirits and El Patron Mexican Grill.

Picnic boxes will be available for pickup between 5:30pm–6:00pm on the day of the event in the Hayden Family Center for the Arts, adjacent to the park. Beer, wine and non-alcoholic drinks will be available on-site for purchase throughout the evening.

Make sure to bring your own blankets, pillows, or chairs, and anything else to make yourself comfortable while you listen to the music. Be sure to check out the featured gallery exhibit in the Hayden Family Center for the Arts during the event!

Downtown Hazleton Farmer's Market returns this Friday

The Downtown Hazleton Farmer's Market will be held as scheduled this Friday, July 30, from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. at the corner of Broad and Laurel streets.

As previously announced, the City of Hazleton will offer free parking to customers of the Downtown Hazleton Farmer’s Market during market hours (Fridays from 10AM-2PM) along the north side of Broad Street between Laurel and Wyoming Streets throughout the end of August.

In addition to the fruits, vegetables, and flowers for sale, and the many services of local health and wellness organizations, this week’s market will also feature music by The Two of Us during the lunchtime hour (11:45 AM -1:00 PM). Customers should be reminded that Burger’s Farm accepts FMNP vouchers as well as EBT/SNAP cards.

New vendor applications are still being accepted. Anyone interested in being a vendor will need to file a Vendor Application with the Greater Hazleton Chamber of Commerce. There is no cost to apply, but all vendors must obtain a Farmer’s Market business license from the City of Hazleton. The fee for this is $50. All vendors must also carry insurance for general liability and property damage and name the Greater Hazleton Chamber of Commerce and the City of Hazleton as added insureds. Vendor application and business license forms are available on the web at https://www.downtownhazleton.org/farmers-market.html.

Vendors Sought for Downtown Hazleton Farmer’s Market

The Greater Hazleton Chamber of Commerce, which operates the Downtown Hazleton Farmers’ Market, is seeking vendor applications for the 2021 season. The first market of the season will take place on Friday, July 9th. The 2021 market, sponsored by the Lehigh Valley Health Network-Hazleton, will run each Friday from 10AM until 2PM through August 27th. Burger’s Farm will return as the primary produce vendor. The market will be held at the corner of Broad and Laurel Streets at the new CAN DO Community Park.

“Due to COVID-19 we didn’t host the market last year,” said Krista Schneider, Executive Director of the Downtown Hazleton Alliance for Progress, “and unfortunately some of our longtime vendors had to change their plans and their business operations. So we are really looking for all types of vendors. Artists and crafters are also welcome.” The Chamber operates the market with the support of the Downtown Hazleton Alliance for Progress.

United States Congressman Matt Cartwright To Speak At July 8 Hybrid Red Carpet Breakfast

The Greater Hazleton Chamber is happy to announce the first hybrid Red Carpet in our legislative series which will happen on July 8 at The Pines Eatery at 8 West Broad Street, Hazleton. Rep Matt Cartwright of the 8th Congressional District will discuss legislation affecting the Greater Hazleton area community. This will be the first face to face meeting of the series since March of 2020, with a twist of also including online invites for those who can’t attend in person.

Telephone Town Hall for PennDOT Pathways Alternative Funding Planning and Environmental Linkages (PEL) Study Will Be Held May 25

PennDOT will host a telephone town hall on Tuesday, May 25 at 6:00 PM regarding the PennDOT Pathways Alternative Funding PEL Study. The public is invited to call in and share their comments live.

The PennDOT Pathways Alternative Funding Planning and Environmental Linkages (PEL) Study identifies near- to long-term transportation funding alternatives to help close Pennsylvania’s transportation funding gap. The draft PEL study is now available for viewing and can be found on PennDOT's on-demand public meeting website (accessed via penndot.gov/funding).

Those interested in attending the town hall can preregister on the Pathways website here to receive a phone call to join at the start of the meeting, or dial in directly to the meeting at 855-756-7520, entry code ext: 73539#.

Pennsylvania State Senator John Yudichak to Speak at Virtual Red Carpet Red Carpet Breakfast

The Greater Hazleton Chamber is continuing with the chamber’s legislative series in its virtual format with PA Senator John Yudichak, representing the 14th Senatorial District, who will address the business community on Thursday, May 20, at the Greater Hazleton Chamber of Commerce Red Carpet Virtual Breakfast program. 

Senator Yudichak will discuss the most up-to-date information on the pandemic mitigation and vaccine efforts and business and industry-related news affecting Greater Hazleton, as well as transportation issues.  Attendees will also have the opportunity for a question and answer session at the end of his presentation. Chamber reflects on the loss of Membership Director Dan Guydish

It is with great sadness that we announce that Dan Guydish, the membership director of the Greater Hazleton Chamber of Commerce since August of 2005, passed away early Monday morning.

Dan had been a central part of the Chamber team for the last 16 years. His fantastic personality, knowledge of the Chamber and the Greater Hazleton area were keys to his success. His smile and manner made everyone feel like a friend in short order. During his time with the Chamber, Dan had personally recruited and signed up more than 1,800 members. Dan’s background of being a small business owner himself was an instant connection to members. He understood their world.

Even during the recent challenges of the pandemic and having the Chamber pivot to a more virtual reality… Dan was an instrumental part of the Chamber’s response. He learned zoom, facilitated efforts with the local municipalities and the MCOGS for the safety and health of our area.  Dan’s recruitment efforts never ended either. He would talk on the phone, do safe drop off of information, and even took part in recent socially distanced ribbon cuttings. A true team player with many talents, Dan also coordinated the great PA Clean Up for the last 4 years. Just two weekends ago, he welcomed and worked with Representative Matt Cartwright and the Lackawanna police academy students and coordinated more than 1,000 volunteers in the Greater Hazleton Area. At another Chamber event, Funfest, Dan worked with the security committee and coordinated many behind the scenes efforts.

Call for Volunteers for Upcoming Luzerne County Election on May 18

Luzerne County Board of Elections is looking for paid volunteers for the upcoming elections, including municipal and school board, on May 18 from 6 a.m. to 9 p.m. Volunteers are scarce and very much needed to make the election day run smoothly. Training is provided in advance of the election date and County officials will work will all volunteers to make sure the feel prepared to help.

The Application Deadline Has Been Extended Until April 9 for Competitive Grant Funding Available to Luzerne County Hospitality Businesses

On February 5, 2021 Governor Wolf signed into law legislation (Act 1 of 2021) that set aside $145 million in funds to aid hospitality industry businesses most adversely affected by the COVID-19 pandemic. For Luzerne County, $3,595,181 in competitive funding is available to Luzerne County hospitality businesses and to cover costs of operating the program. The program is now accepting applications and the application deadline has been extended until April 9th at 5:00 PM.

Chamber Recruiting Volunteers for the Great Pennsylvania Cleanup in Greater Hazleton

The Greater Hazleton Chamber of Commerce, along with the Pennsylvania Department of Transportation  will once again sponsor the "Great Pennsylvania Cleanup” campaign. The one-day cleanup will be conducted Saturday, April 24, 2021 rain or shine.

"The Great Pennsylvania Cleanup"  is a statewide effort designed to encourage concerned citizens and groups to participate in a meaningful community beautification effort. The Greater Hazleton Chamber of Commerce is the local coordinator for the Greater Hazleton Area.

Rep. Tarah Toohil's office launches COVID-19 Economic Recovery Business Survey

This week, a COVID-19 Economic Recovery Business Survey was launched to gather feedback as we work to develop and implement policies to restore Pennsylvania’s struggling economy.

The brief survey is open to employers in all sectors and businesses of all sizes. Survey participants are asked about his or her business or industry and current challenges. The survey also seeks input on the type of assistance that would be most beneficial, the one most impactful thing state government could do to support future success, and any other ideas to kick start the economy. 

 

We must get the Commonwealth on the road to recovery as soon as possible and we can only do that by working together. The survey is open through March 19.

Chamber releases 2021-2022 Image Book

The Greater Hazleton Chamber of Commerce 2021-2022 Image Book is now available, both as a printed publication and in a digital format with interactive ads that, when clicked, will take you directly to the advertisers website.

The image book is a complete guide to life and business in Greater Hazleton. It is published every two years as an official guide to the area for current residents, new residents and businesses.

The book, which is distributed throughout the region, provides a look at life in the Hazleton area and is designed to showcase the region’s amenities.

Chamber President Mary Malone said, “We are proud to bring this publication to the region every two years to showcase why Greater Hazleton will always be the best place to live, work and play. This publication is a valuable tool for newcomers, real estate professionals, economic development partners and anyone else who wants to learn more about our area.”

The book features sections on topics such as business, education, real estate, worship, shopping and dining, health care, arts and culture, and recreation, with each chapter researched and updated to include the latest information. The history section includes photos of the region in days gone by, many courtesy of the Greater Hazleton Historical Society. Another section describes the services provided by the Greater Hazleton Chamber of Commerce and benefits for members.

Governor Wolf Announces New COVID-19 Mitigation Guidelines

As COVID-19 cases continue to rise, Governor Tom Wolf and Secretary of Health Dr. Rachel Levine today implored Pennsylvanians to take the next three weeks and stand united against the virus by adhering to existing mitigation orders and stricter efforts announced today.
 
“Today I am announcing additional, temporary COVID-19 protective mitigation measures in the commonwealth,” said Gov. Wolf. “With these measures in place, we hope to accomplish three goals: First, stop the devastating spread of COVID-19 in the commonwealth. Second, keep our hospitals and health care workers from becoming overwhelmed. And third, help Pennsylvanians get through the holiday season – and closer to a widely available vaccine – as safely as possible. This is a bridge to a better future in Pennsylvania.”
 
The new, limited-time mitigation orders take effect at 12:01 a.m. on December 12, and remain in effect until 8 a.m. on January 4, 2021.
 
“Each of the last two days we have reported the highest number of deaths since the beginning of the pandemic,” Dr. Rachel Levine said. “In the past week, we have reported close to 1,100 new deaths from COVID-19 across Pennsylvania. The virus continues to strain our health care systems and the dramatic rise in cases among all age groups, including among school-age children, is alarming. Since the start of the pandemic, there have been more than 37,500 cases among children age 5 to 18, yet 9,500 of those cases occurred in the past two weeks.”
 
The Order provisions outlined here are accompanied by supportive data used in part to make these decisions. The data provides a sampling of research that supports why limiting gatherings, reducing occupancy, and temporarily suspending some activities, among other efforts, are considered vital to stopping the spread of COVID-19.
 
Two recent studies, one by Yale University and one by Stanford University, substantiate more than one of these mitigation efforts. Links to the full studies and additional data and research can be found on the Department of Health’s data page, here.
 
Limited-Time Mitigation efforts announced today include:
 
In-Person Dining and Alcohol Sales
·   All in-person indoor dining at businesses in the retail food services industry, including, but not limited to, bars, restaurants, breweries, wineries, distilleries, social clubs, and private catered events is prohibited.   
·   Outdoor dining, take-out food service, and take-out alcohol sales are permitted and may continue, subject to any limitations or restrictions imposed by Pennsylvania law, or this or any other Order issued by the Sec. of Health or by the governor.  
 
Multiple studies have found indoor dining to drive case increases and fatalities. A study by JP Morgan analyzed credit card spending of more than 30 million Chase cardholders and Johns Hopkins University’s case tracker and found that higher restaurant spending in a state predicted a rise in new infections there three weeks later. Additionally, research from Stanford University found that restaurants accounted for a significant amount of new infections while research from Yale University found that closing restaurants reduced fatality rates.
 
Indoor Gatherings and Events
·   Indoor gatherings and events of more than 10 persons are prohibited.  
·   Churches, synagogues, temples, mosques, and other places of congregate worship are specifically excluded from the limitations set forth above during religious services, these institutions are strongly encouraged to find alternative methods for worship, as in person gatherings pose a significant risk to participants at this time. While this an incredibly difficult recommendation to make, particularly at this time of year, faith leaders must carefully weigh the health risks to their congregants given the immense amount of community spread of COVID-19.
 
new study from Stanford University and published in the journal, nature, used cellphone data collected from 10 U.S. cities from March to May to demonstrate that restaurants, gyms, cafes, churches and other crowded indoor venues accounted for some 8 in 10 new infections in the early months of the U.S. coronavirus epidemic. 
 
Outdoor Gatherings and Events
·   Outdoor gatherings and events of more than 50 persons are prohibited.   
 
According to a Yale University study, limiting outdoor gatherings was among consistent policies found to reduce fatality rates.   
The CDC states that medium-sized outdoor gatherings carry a higher risk of COVID-19 spread, even with social distancing. CDC notes that the more people an individual interacts with at a gathering and the longer that interaction lasts, the higher the potential risk of becoming infected with COVID-19 and COVID-19 spreading, and that the higher the level of community transmission in the area that the gathering is being held, the higher the risk of COVID-19 spreading during a gathering.
 
Capacity Limits for Businesses
·   All in-person businesses serving the public may only operate at up to 50% of the maximum capacity stated on the applicable certificate of occupancy, except as limited by existing orders to a smaller capacity limit. 
The same Stanford University study that collected cellphone data also noted that limiting indoor capacity can reduce COVID-19 transmissions.
 
Gyms and Fitness Facilities 
·   Indoor operations at gyms and fitness facilities are prohibited. 
·   Outdoor facilities and outdoor classes can continue, but all participants must wear face coverings in accordance with the Sec. of Health’s Updated Order Requiring Universal Face Coverings, including any subsequent amendments, and practice physical distancing requirements.   
According to a Yale University study, closing businesses like gyms was among consistent policies found to reduce fatality rates.
 
Entertainment Industry 
·   All in-person businesses in the entertainment industry serving the public within a building or indoor defined area, including, but not limited to, theaters, concert venues, museums, movie theaters, arcades, casinos, bowling alleys, private clubs, and all other similar entertainment, recreational or social facilities, are prohibited from operation.   
 
The CDC puts movie theaters and other indoor settings on its list of higher-risk activities for contracting COVID-19.
 
In-Person Extracurricular School Activities
·   Voluntary activities sponsored or approved by a school entity's governing body or administration are suspended, but these extracurricular activities may be held virtually. This includes, but is not limited to, attendance at or participation in activities such musical ensembles, school plays, student council, clubs, and school dances.
 
Our top priority is stopping the spread of this virus so students and teachers can return to their classrooms as soon as possible. Data from the Department of Health notes that one-quarter of the cases of COVID among school-age children have occurred within the past two weeks, increasing the need to keep children safe outside of school so that they can return to classrooms.
 
K-12 School Sports and Youth Sports
·   All sports at K-12 public schools, nonpublic schools, private schools and club, travel, recreational, intermural, and intramural sports are paused.
 
The Pennsylvania Principals Association is recommending a delay to the start of the winter sports season. The surge in cases among school-age children increases the risk that asymptomatic participants will spread the virus at a game or practice, in the locker room, while traveling to and from events, or at team meals, parties or other gatherings. 
 
Professional and Collegiate Sports 
·   Professional or collegiate sports activities may continue in accordance with guidance from the CDC and the Department of Health.
·   Spectators may not attend such sports activities in person.  
 
The CDC warns large gatherings create a high risk of COVID-19 spreading.
“We know that COVID-19 thrives in places where people gather together,” Gov. Wolf said. “Therefore, these mitigation measures target high-risk environments and activities and aim to reduce the spread of this devastating virus.”
 
According to Yale University research, mitigation measures such as mandatory mask requirements, and gym and restaurant closures are policies that most consistently predict lower four- to six-week-ahead fatality growth.
 
“The work we do now to slow the spread of COVID-19 is not only crucial to keeping our fellow Pennsylvanians safe and healthy,” Gov. Wolf said. “It will help all of us get back to normal, and back to all of the things we’ve missed, faster. And it means more Pennsylvanians will be alive to celebrate that brighter future. This year, we show our love for our families and friends by celebrating safely and protecting one another.”

COVID-19 Mobile Testing Available in Hazleton

Hazleton FlyerThe Wright Center for Community Health will be offering a COVID-19 Mobile Testing program on Wednesday, December 9, from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. in the Hazleton City parking lot on the corner of East Chestnut and South Pine streets.

The program will offer COVID-19 testing, medical education and outreach. Walk-ups are welcome but appointments are preferred and can be scheduled by calling 570-230-0019. Bilingual staff will be on hand to assist people.

Masks are required and social distancing must be observed. Please bring your ID and insurance cards. All insurances are accepted, including Medicare/Medicaid and CHIP. If you have no insurance, information is available about the Sliding Fee Discount Program.

Wolf Administration COVID-19 Announcements: Protecting the Health Care System, New Traveler Testing Order, Strengthened Masking Order, Recommendations for Colleges and Universities

As Pennsylvania experiences a resurgence of COVID-19 cases with significantly higher daily case counts than in the spring and hospitalizations on the rise, the Wolf Administration has identified four new mitigation efforts, which Secretary of Health Dr. Rachel Levine announced today.

“It is our collective responsibility to protect our communities and our most vulnerable Pennsylvanians from COVID-19 and to continue to work together to get through this pandemic. These targeted mitigation efforts, combined with existing ones, are paramount to saving lives and protecting our economy,” Gov. Wolf said. “The administration will continue to monitor the risks posed by COVID-19 across the commonwealth and will reinstate or institute new targeted mitigation tactics as necessary.”

Plans underway for December 4th First Friday

holiday marketThe Downtown Hazleton Alliance for Progress is teaming up with several organizations to offer holiday events on December 4th that the public can participate in safely. This includes a Holiday Night Market starting at 5PM which will feature a limited number of vendors hosted by the Hazleton Art League inside the new Hayden Family Center for the Arts (31 W. Broad St.) to ensure social distancing, as well as an outdoor market surrounding the art center for those who want to do their shopping outdoors.

On Wyoming Street across from Frankie’s Pizzeria and Manuel’s Empanadas, Hazleton UNICO will be hosting Santa and Mrs. Claus for family photos with hot cocoa. “We are Hazleton” (City Council members) will be selling blue peace poinsettia flowers. There will also be several outdoor food vendors. All that Dancin’ and Voice by Angela students will perform, as will MPB Community Players, who will sing some old fashioned Christmas carols.

Local Restaurants Featured in Food Trail Promotion

Food TrailThe COVID-19 pandemic has been especially hard on retail food businesses as restaurants and bars have had to limit their seating capacity, invest in alterations for outdoor dining, and modify their business operations. In order to help support local eateries and pubs during this difficult time, several organizations have teamed up to launch a Food Trail promotion to encourage the public to patronize local restaurants, whether dine in or take-out, or by way of gift card purchases.

Thanks to funds made available from the Luzerne County CARES Act grant, the Downtown Hazleton Alliance for Progress and Greater Hazleton Chamber of Commerce has teamed up with the Luzerne County Tourism and Visitor’s Bureau and DiscoverNEPA to organize five different food trails that collectively feature 70 different restaurants in and around Hazleton.

Greater Hazleton Chamber announces new programs to assist small business

Working together with local partners through the Recovery & Resiliency Task Force formed earlier this year, the Greater Hazleton Chamber announced that it was awarded more than $240,000 in grant funding from Luzerne County to undertake economic development initiatives designed to help small businesses recover from the impacts of the COVID-19 pandemic and also spur the local economy. The funds are part of the Coronavirus Aid, Relief and Economic Security (CARES) Act funding the County received from the state, and complements other initiatives being undertaken by the Greater Wilkes Barre Chamber and its partners.

Chamber EvolveThe Greater Wilkes-Barre, Greater Hazleton, Greater Pittston, and Back Mountain Chambers of Commerce have launched a new economic development initiative called Project EVOLVE.  

Project EVOLVE is an initiative designed to identify solutions and align external innovation to assist local businesses as they adjust to, and thrive in, the new post-COVID economy. EVOLVE leverages the innovation, products, and services already located in Northeastern PA, as a means to provide cross-industry solutions to help businesses adapt to new methods of doing business.  

Project EVOLVE utilizes a systematic approach to identify COVID-generated challenges within the top ten industries in Northeast PA. These industries, chosen based upon the number of establishments and percentage of overall employment, are: health care and social assistance, retail trade, accommodation and food services, manufacturing , construction, transportation and warehousing, other services except public administration, wholesale trade, professional and technical services, and finance and insurance. By addressing one industry at a time, then leveraging the network and strength of local economic development partners, the Chambers will identify and deliver innovative solutions to help businesses “evolve” and thrive in the new, post-COVID business environment.

Funfest Parade Canceled Due to Quaker City String Band Members Contracting COVID-19

canceledAs a result of two Quaker City String Band members contracting COVID-19, the Funfest Parade has been canceled for Sunday.

Greater Hazleton Chamber of Commerce President Mary Malone said, “It is with a heavy heart that we have had to make the difficult decision to cancel the Funfest Parade. In an effort to keep the safety of the Funfest Committee members and Greater Hazleton residents, as well as that of the Quaker City String Band members, at the forefront of our minds, we feel this was the appropriate decision to make at this time. Our prayers and well wishes are with the members of the Quaker City String Band.”

Malone added, “We were only alerted to this development with the band on Friday afternoon. Although we did try to find alternate musical entertainment, as you can imagine, it was difficult on such short notice. However, the cancellation of the parade does not diminish our pride in what Funfest stands for in the Greater Hazleton community and our appreciation for our Hometown Heroes. On behalf of the Chamber and the Funfest Committee, I extend my deepest appreciation to the Funfest 2020 Hometown Hero Joseph Barna and all the nominees, as well as Mayor Jeff Cusat, Police Chief Brian Schoonmaker and the Hazleton Police Department members, Fire Department Chief Donald Leshko and the Hazleton Fire Department members, and the Hazleton City Council. The Downtown Hazleton Farmers’ Market has been cancelled for 2020 due to challenges presented by the COVID-19 pandemic. The farmers market which has occurred for last 9 years will return in July 2021

Community Will Vote to Select Funfest Hometown Hero

Funfest Hometown Heroes webCommunity has always been at the heart of Funfest and now the Funfest Committee is asking the community to help select the inaugural Funfest Hometown Hero.

The Hometown Heroes initiative was started this year as a way to honor local military service members, emergency first responders and medical professionals for their service to Greater Hazleton.

Every month since January, community members have been submitting their nominees for the contest and the Funfest Committee members have been voting to select that month's winner. All seven monthly winners are now in the running to be selected as the Funfest 2020 Hometown Hero.

Chamber Announces Plans are Underway for Their 128th Anniversary and Executive Business Exposition

The Greater Hazleton Chamber of Commerce has announced plans are well underway for their 128th Anniversary and Executive Business Exposition, which is taking place on Thursday, September 10th. This event is typically held annually in May, however due to COVID-19, the event has been rescheduled to September. In addition, the location has been changed from an indoor event to an outdoor event, in order to allow for proper social distancing guidelines. It will take place at Pasco Schiavo City Park on Poplar Street in Hazleton.

The committee of judges reviewed the applications submitted on the basis of the three critical elements: excelling in professional endeavors, community service, and supporting and mentoring women.

Mary Malone, Chamber President noted “ The Chamber membership has many talented women business leaders who excel in their designated field of expertise. This year’s applications highlighted that talent pool.” The beautiful Athena Award, which is from the International Athena Association, is being sponsored for the first time this year by, Community Bank, N.A. Registration Re-Opens for Chamber Job Fair Rescheduled for September 17th

The Greater Hazleton Chamber of Commerce is seeking businesses to participate in the 2020 Greater Hazleton Job Fair which has been rescheduled from March to Thursday, September 17th. The job fair will also be held at a new location, the Laurel Mall, Route 93 in Hazleton 10 am to 4 pm.

This one-day event, will provide participating businesses with an informal, yet confidential forum to discuss career opportunities and options with hundreds of individuals from throughout the entire Greater Hazleton Area. Participating employers may accept resumes, offer information about career fields and employment opportunities, conduct interviews, promote your business and also seek for interns, summer employment, full and part time positions.

Chamber Woman’s Luncheon Set for July 28th

july womens luncheonThe Greater Hazleton Chamber of Commerce Women’s Networking Committee is holding a woman’s networking luncheon program on Tuesday, July 28th from 12 noon to 1 pm at Cusat’s Café, outdoor pavilion, located at 742 Alter Street in Hazleton. Small Business Emergency Relief Microgrant Program

The Greater Hazleton COVID-19 Recovery & Resiliency (R&R) Task Force has established the Small Business Emergency Relief Microgrant Program. All funds raised will be dedicated towards a MicroGrant program for local, small businesses within the Greater Hazleton Area that have been greatly impacted by the COVID-19 pandemic.

The MicroGrant program guidelines are under development, with at least two grant rounds being awarded. The number and size of the grants will depend upon the amount of funds raised. Application rounds are currently closed but donations are still being accepted for the program.

Greater Hazleton Community Unites to Assist Local Small Businesses with Microgrant Program

Greater Hazleton is well-known as an area full of generous businesses and individuals who never hesitate to lend a hand to others when times are tough. That sense of community has been on full display during the COVID-19 pandemic as more than 60 patrons have donated to the Hazleton Area Small Business Emergency Relief Microgrant Program.

The Greater Hazleton COVID-19 Recovery & Resiliency (R&R) Task Force, which is constructed of business and industry leaders from throughout the area, established the microgrant program to help sustain small businesses in Greater Hazleton through this difficult time to ensure the resurgence of a vibrant local economy.

The crowdfunded donor campaign has raised more than $50,000 from local individuals, families, loyal customers, and other private corporations, including Cargill Meat Solutions, Mericle Commercial Real Estate Services, Lehigh Valley Health Network-Hazleton, the Hazleton Standard Speaker, the Hazleton Rotary Club, CAN DO and First Federal Charitable Foundation. Chamber Women’s Networking Committee Announces Applications Are Available for Women’s Empowerment Grant

The Greater Hazleton Chamber of Commerce Women’s networking committee is currently seeking applications for the twelfth annual Women’s Empowerment Grant. This grant was established to encourage women to pursue training or education that will help them start or advance a career. The target of the grant is women who are: currently working and want to advance in their career through education or training; returning to the workforce; and/or seeking to change their current career path and pursue something more in line with their interests or passions. The grant is also intended to be available to those who would not necessarily have access to scholarships or grants. For this reason, graduating high school students will not be eligible to apply for the grant.

Pennsylvania 30 Day Fund Established to Help Small Businesses

We are Pennsylvanians helping Pennsylvanians. 

The COVID-19 crisis has put millions of small business jobs at risk impacting millions of families across our Commonwealth. 

The nonprofit Pennsylvania 30 Day Fund was launched by Jeff Bartos, Richard Phillips and Roger Braunfeld.  Working with other business leaders throughout the Commonwealth, the Fund’s goal is to help save as many Pennsylvania jobs as possible while small businesses await recently approved federal funding.

Pennsylvania businesses that qualify for assistance from the Fund are:

Small businesses that employ three to 30 people;

Based in Pennsylvania and have been operating for at least one year;

 

Owned and operated by a Pennsylvania resident.

The funds dispersed to small businesses by the Pennsylvania 30 Day fund do not need to be repaid. If businesses who receive the Fund’s assistance do, at a later date, wish to “pay it forward” to another Pennsylvania small business in need of assistance, they may do so by directing those dollars back to the Fund, which will disburse the funding to another Pennsylvania business in need.

The Luzerne County Ready Pledge was launched to communicate a commitment made by businesses of all sizes to protect the health, safety, and well-being of their employees and customers. Being Luzerne County Ready means that all federal, state, and local public health guidelines are being followed at any location with the Luzerne County Ready designation, which can be identified by printed and digital signage. These guidelines include following proper social distancing, sanitation, and cleaning protocols, and will enable our community to continue to be a great place to live, work, and play. Local Task Force Organizes Donor Campaign to Help Small Business

The Greater Hazleton Chamber of Commerce and Downtown Hazleton Alliance are working with the Greater Hazleton Civic Partnership and other members of the Greater Hazleton COVID-19 Recovery & Resiliency (R&R) Task Force to establish the Small Business Emergency Relief Microgrant Program.

This is a crowdfunded donor campaign with a goal of raising $75,000 from local individuals, families, loyal customers, and other private corporations. This approach taps into the collective support of a large pool of donors—with opportunities for donations to be made via online platforms.

All funds raised will be dedicated towards a MicroGrant program for local, small businesses within the Greater Hazleton Area that have been greatly impacted by the COVID-19 pandemic.

Anyone interested in donating to the campaign can do so online via the website: https://www.patronicity.com/hazletonsmallbusiness, or by sending a check directly to the Greater Hazleton Civic Partnership at 8 W. The MicroGrant program guidelines are under development, and applications will start being accepted on May 18th, with at least two grant rounds being awarded. The number and size of the grants will depend upon the amount of funds raised.

Wolf Administration Issues Guidance as Construction Industry Prepares to Resume Work May 1

As the construction industry prepares to resume work, the Wolf Administration today issued guidance for all construction businesses and employees to mitigate the spread of COVID-19.

All businesses in the construction industry in the commonwealth are permitted to resume in-person operations starting Friday, May 1 – one week earlier than previously announced.

Previously, Governor Tom Wolf and Secretary of Health Dr. Rachel Levine ordered most construction projects to cease unless they were supporting life-sustaining businesses or activities or were granted an exemption to perform or support life-sustaining activities.

“My administration has taken measured, aggressive steps to protect public health and safety, including strictly limiting the types of businesses and projects that may continue to operate during this unprecedented time,” Wolf said. “Thankfully, these actions are working, and we are flattening the curve. As we start to take steps to reopen the state, we recognize that the construction industry is vital to Pennsylvania’s economy and may operate safely with stringent guidance in place that will protect employees and the public.”

The guidance, developed from guidance created by the General Contractors Association of Pennsylvania, provides universal protocols for all construction activity, as well as specific additional guidance for residential, commercial and public construction projects.

All business and employees in the construction industry must adhere to the Secretary of Health’s order providing for business safety measures, which requires that every person present at a work site wear masks/face coverings unless they are unable for medical or safety reasons and requires that businesses establish protocols upon discovery that the business has been exposed to a person who is a probable or confirmed case of COVID-19.

All construction projects must maintain proper social distancing and provide hand washing and sanitizing stations for workers, as well as cleaning and sanitizing protocols for high risk transmission areas. Businesses must identify a “pandemic safety officer” for each project or work site, or, for large scale construction projects, for each contractor at the site.

Residential construction projects may not permit more than four individuals on the job site at any time, not including individuals who require temporary access to the site and are not directly engaged in the construction activity.

For non-residential or commercial projects, the number of individuals permitted on enclosed portions of a project varies depending on the size of the enclosed site. Commercial construction firms should also strongly consider establishing a written safety plan for each work location containing site specific details for the implementation of this guidance to be shared with all employees and implemented and enforced by the pandemic safety officer.

Contractors performing work at the direction of the commonwealth, municipalities or school districts should defer to those public entities to determine what projects may continue.

Local governments may elect to impose more stringent requirements than those contained in the guidance and in such instances, businesses must adhere to those more stringent requirements. 

Local officials have been tasked with ensuring that construction businesses are aware that this guidance exists and notifying businesses that a complaint of noncompliance was received.

Drive-thru Testing Site at Mohegan Sun Arena Now Open

More COVID-19 testing is now available to residents of Northeast Pennsylvania.

The state Department of Health announced on April 22 that a COVID-19 drive-thru testing site at Mohegan Sun Arena in Wilkes-Barre Twp. will be open to all symptomatic residents. 

The site will be open 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. 

Registration is required one day in advance and can be done online at the department’s website -- health.pa.gov

In addition, state Secretary of Health Dr. Rachel Levine said phone registration for testing at the site is available by calling the Department of Health's phone number, 1-877-724-3258.

"Our professionals answering the phone will be able to schedule them to get that test at that site," Levine said. "So we're very pleased to add that; it's very important.”

PA Manufacturer Offering Free Floor Stickers to Help Customers Practice Physical Distancing

As efforts continue to minimize the spread of COVID-19, many consumers are still not practicing physical distancing. One manufacturer is trying to help enforce compliance by offering free floor stickers to remind people to do their part to flatten the curve.

National news sources continue to report that customers are not following recommended guidelines to have one person do the shopping, only touch what you intend to purchase, wear personal protective equipment (such as masks and gloves), and observe physical distancing of at least six feet from others.

Brian Vnuk of Brand Graphic Solutions, a family-owned, Pennsylvania-based company that manufactures floor stickers, signage, and other products talked about the rationale behind the offer. “We keep hearing stories from our clients about customers’ lack of compliance with public health recommendations, and offering free floor stickers is something we can do to help. GIANT Company announces grant for food-based businesses

Rapid Response is an early intervention service that assists workers and employers affected by layoffs, plant closures, or natural disasters. It provides access to the Commonwealth's PA CareerLink system of user-friendly resources and information to help transition workers into reemployment. The sooner employers, their workers, and the community come together to manage the change, the better the outcome for everyone.

  • The Rapid Response program was developed to help dislocated workers who are part of a large layoff
  • Its primary objective is to provide workers with the resources and services they need to allow them to find new jobs or get the training and education needed for new careers so that they can get back to work quickly
  • There is no charge to the employer or employee for these services and they are provided regardless of the reason for the layoff

An Innovative Alternative to Employee Layoffs

Shared-Work is a voluntary program that provides employers facing a decline in business with an alternative to layoffs.

• Shared-Work preserves employees’ jobs and the employer’s trained workforce during disruptions to the firm’s regular business activity by allowing the employer to reduce the work hours of a group of employees as an alternative to a layoff.

• Employees covered by an approved Shared-Work plan receive a percentage of their normal UC benefit while they work the reduced work schedule, assuming they are otherwise eligible for UC.

• Shared-Work cushions the adverse effect of the reduction in business activity on employees and ensures that these employees will be available to resume prior employment levels when business demand increases.

Lehigh Valley Health Network has announced proper steps to take if you think you or someone you love might have the coronavirus. If you think you have COVID-19 or may have been exposed to someone who does, stay home. Do not go to the emergency room or LVHN ExpressCARE location. We will screen you virtually on the phone or online so that you only need to leave your home if testing is needed. Here are your options:

President Trump Signs Families First Coronavirus Response Act to provide Paid FMLA Leave and Paid Sick Leave in Response to COVID-19

From McNees Wallace & Nurick LLC: Yesterday, President Trump signed into law historic legislation that will have a significant impact on many employers nation-wide.  The legislation, called the Families First Coronavirus Response Act, has many provisions.  We will focus this discussion on the workplace issues that most employers can expect to face.

Paid Sick Leave
The law includes the Emergency Paid Sick Leave Act.  This requires that employers with 500 or fewer employees provide paid sick leave to all employees for any of the following reasons:

  • The employee is subject to a Federal, State, or local quarantine or isolation order related to COVID-19;
  • The employee has been advised by a health care provider to self-quarantine due to concerns related to COVID-19;
  • To obtain a medical diagnosis or care if experiencing the symptoms of COVID-19;
  • The employee is caring for an individual who is subject to an order as described in bullet point 1 or 2 above;
  • To care for a son or daughter under 18 years of age if the child’s school has been closed or the child care provider is not available due to COVID-19; or
  • The employee is experiencing any other substantially similar condition specified by the Secretary of Health and Human Services.

Full time employees will be eligible for up to 80 hours of paid sick time, and part time employees will be eligible for a number of hours equal to the number of hours that part time employee typically works over a two-week period. Employees will be permitted to use the emergency paid sick leave before accessing other paid leave the employer has previously provided.  The amount of pay due under Emergency Sick Leave is dependent upon the reason for the sick leave.  If leave is for one of the first three bullet points above, the payment is based on the employee’s regular rate of pay and is capped at $511 per day and $5,110 total.  If the need for leave is for any other qualifying reason, payment is two-thirds of the employee’s regular rate of pay, with a cap of $200 per day and a total of $2,000. 

Expansion of Family and Medical Leave Act
The law also includes the Emergency Family and Medical Leave Expansion Act, which amends the existing Family and Medial Leave Act.  Unlike traditional FMLA that applies to employers with 50 or more employees, the new expansion provisions apply to employers with fewer than 500 employees. Likewise, despite the traditional FMLA’s requirement that employees must be employed for a year and work 1,250 hours in the previous twelve months to be eligible, the expansion provision extends eligibility to all employees who have been employed for 30 days or more.  The following are the highlights of the expanded FMLA entitlements.

  • Eligible employees will be permitted to take paid FMLA leave if the employee is unable to work (or telework) due to a need to care for a son or daughter under 18 years of age if the child’s school has been closed or the child care provider is not available due to a public health emergency.
  • The Act provides definitions for most of these key terms.
  • The first 10 days of the FMLA leave used for these purposes can be unpaid, but (as discussed in greater detail above) an employee may elect to use the Emergency Paid Sick Leave provided under the Act or other available paid leave during the initial 10 day period.
  • Eligible employees will receive two thirds of their regular rate of pay for the remaining 10 weeks, up to a maximum of $200/day and $10,000 total.
  • Healthcare benefits must continue during the leave of absence.

Employees will have job protection during this leave, but there are some exceptions to this requirement for small businesses.

In reading the Emergency FMLA Expansion Act and the Emergency Paid Sick Leave Act together, it appears that full time employees will be permitted to use two weeks of paid leave before being transitioned to the wage benefit provided for under the Emergency FMLA Expansion Act.  

The Families First Act provides for a tax credit program that appears to be intended to reimburse employers for 100 percent of the costs of the paid Sick Leave and Paid FMLA leave in the vast majority of cases.  Essentially, employers will receive a rebate or a refund of their federal wage taxes to cover these costs, but there are some limits.  For public sector employers, it is unclear how (or if) they will receive a refund of the costs.  

In addition, the Families First Act contains provisions for the expansion of unemployment compensation benefits.  These provisions are designed to incentivize states to expand eligibility for UC benefits and eliminate any waiting period associated with the receipt of such benefits.  There are also specific provisions for extending benefits to employees and employers impacted by COVID-19.

The Act states that it will be effective no later than 15 days after the date of enactment, and there are some concerns that it will be made effective sooner.  There are also sunsetting provisions in the legislation as well, which make clear that these provisions are only through the end of the year. 

The above represents only a summary of the historic legislation, and given the time and space limitations we have, we did not cover all of the details.  We will provide additional information moving forward.  McNees will also hold a webinar on Monday, March 23, 2020 targeted for employers with less than 500 employees.  We will provide registration details on our web site and our blog.  

In the meantime, we recommend that you consult with counsel to determine how the Families First Coronavirus Response Act will impact your workplace.  You may contact any member of the McNees Labor and Employment Group for guidance.

Chamber Seeking Businesses to Participate in Annual Job Fair

The Greater Hazleton Chamber of Commerce is seeking businesses to participate in the 2020 Greater Hazleton Job Fair set for Thursday, March 26th . The job fair will be held at Genetti Ballrooms on Route 309 in Hazleton from 10 am to 4 pm.

This one-day event, will provide participating businesses with an informal, yet confidential forum to discuss career opportunities and options with hundreds of individuals from throughout the entire Greater Hazleton Area. Participating employers may accept resumes, offer information about career fields and employment opportunities, conduct interviews, promote your business and also seek for interns, summer employment, full and part time positions.

The cost for businesses to participate is $275.00 for Chamber members and $375.00 for non-Chamber members. The price includes an 8’ x 8’ booth space with side and back drops, a 6’ skirted table, two chairs, wastebasket, company identification sign, coffee and donuts in the morning and electric service (if requested). Lunch tickets may be purchased for $15.00 each.

Chamber Hosting Seminar on OSHA & Impact on Small Business

The Greater Hazleton Chamber of Commerce is offering a seminar entitled OSHA & Impact on Small Business on Thursday, December 12th.

The US economy has grown through the efforts of entrepreneurs and their business, and the growth as these start-ups generate sales and need to expand production. What is overlooked, is the need to comply with OSHA and provide a safe environment for the employees. Getting an understanding of what is needed is the focus of this session.

In the program we will discuss the majority of private sector businesses and their employees must meet OSHA safety and health requirements; typical workplace safety and health management actions include: identifying and eliminating worksite hazards; taking all measures possible to protect employees from illness or injury; and educating employees on workplace health and safety measures; learn how OSHA can be a key element of your business growth and find out what are the five key areas of focus for small businesses.

Winners Announced for Greater Hazleton Chamber of Commerce Business & Community Awards

The Greater Hazleton Chamber of Commerce has announced the winners of their Annual 2019 Business and Community Awards.  In an attempt to help promote October as “Chamber of Commerce” month, the Greater Hazleton Chamber of Commerce will hold a special awards luncheon, sponsored by Community Bank, NA, to recognize the winners of the awards.  The luncheon will take place on Thursday, October 24th at 11:45 am at Four Blooms Restaurant in Drums.  The cost of the luncheon is $25 per person. Winning the 2019 Small Business of the Year Awards, sponsored by the 2006 recipient, Comfort Keepers is for under ten employees, Maria Rosario Allstate Agency and under fifty employees,  Edgewood. The purpose of these awards is to show appreciation and recognition to small businesses in the Greater Hazleton Area and promote the importance of small businesses to the economy and welfare of the entire community. Eligible applicants included any Chamber member business that has no more than 50 full-time employees and is located in the Greater Hazleton area. Judging was based on staying power, growth, community contribution, and overall management philosophy.

The Greater Hazleton Chamber of Commerce Women’s Networking committee has recently awarded their twelfth annual Women’s Empowerment Grants. This grant was established to encourage women to pursue training or education that will help them start or advance a career. The target of the grant is women who are currently working and want to advance in their career through education or training; are returning to the workforce; or are seeking to change their current career path.

Chamber Seeking Candidates for Annual Business & Community Awards

Business & Community AwardsThe Greater Hazleton Chamber of Commerce is now seeking nominations for their 18th Annual Business & Community Awards. The awards are given each year in order to recognize individuals and businesses, which help to promote and support the Greater Hazleton Area.

Nominations are being accepted for: Small Business of the Year; Large Business of the Year, Rocco Colangelo Volunteer of the Year, Pride of Place, Healthy Workplace of the Year, Green Business of the Year and Young Entrepreneur of the Year.

A business or individual may be nominated for an award or they can nominate themselves. Once the nomination is received by the Chamber, the nominee will be notified and asked to complete an official application. The applications are reviewed and scored by a volunteer committee, and all winners will be recognized at a special luncheon program, sponsored by Community Bank, N.A., to be held on Thursday, October 24th at 11:45 am Four Blooms Restaurant in Drums.

Chamber Golf Winners Announced

Chamber Golf Tournament WinnersThe team comprised of players from The Law Offices of Skokoski & DeCosmo, P.C., Charles DeCosmo, Greg Passon, Chris Sallemi and Jay Sallemi took the Chamber’s Championship flight award during the Greater Hazleton Chamber of Commerce 52nd Annual Golf Tournament held Thursday, August 15th at Split Rock Golf Club in Lake Harmony.

120 golfers took part in the tournament which featured trophies, prizes and awards valued at over $15,000.00.

Chamber Announces Starting Assignments for Tommorrows Golf Outing

124 local and regional golfers will tee off at 11:00 AM tomorrow, August 15th for the 52nd Annual Greater Hazleton Chamber of Commerce Golf Outing. The shotgun start tournament is scheduled to take place at 11 am at Split Rock Golf Club in Lake Harmony, with registration beginning at 9:30 am, and will feature trophies, prizes and awards.

The tournament will begin with registration, coffee & donuts, and $5k putting contest qualifications at 9:30 am. Food and drinks are provided throughout the day, as well as an on-course expo. A cocktail hour and hors d’ oeuvres as well as a full course dinner and awards program will take place following the round of play.

Championship, first and second flight awards will be given. A closest to the pin, closet to the pin - second shot on the green and a men’s and women’s longest drive will also be presented. A Pot of Gold contest will be conducted and hole in one contests will take place featuring a $5,000 cash prize and more.

US Congressman Meuser to Speak at Chamber Breakfast

Congressman MeuserThe Greater Hazleton Chamber will be hosting an August Red Carpet in our legislative series. The newly drawn legislative map that started on January 1st, 2019 has parts of the Greater Hazleton Area in the 9th Congressional District. Congressman Meuser will discuss legislation affecting the Greater Hazleton area community. Attendees will also have the opportunity for a question and answer session at the end of his presentation. The breakfast program is sponsored by Mauch Chunk Trust Company, and will take place on Thursday, August 29th at Capriotti’s, One Banks Avenue in McAdoo.

The program will begin at 7:45 am and conclude at 9:00 am. A full breakfast will be served and the cost to attend is $20 for chamber members and $25 for non-chamber members. Chamber Golf Outing & On-Course Expo Set for August 15th Has Limited Space Available

Golf Promo picOnly a few openings remain for the 52nd Annual Greater Hazleton Chamber of Commerce Golf Outing which will take place on Thursday, August 15th. The shotgun start tournament is scheduled to take place at Split Rock Golf Club in Lake Harmony at 11 am. Registration begins at 9 am.

Registration includes 18 holes of golf and a cart, gift for each golfer, prior to shotgun start coffee, donuts, bloody mary's and mimosas. On-course expo all day with businesses setup at the tees providing giveaways, food, drinks, snacks, games and more. An on-course hospitality tent with the famous ‘Chamber Chili Dogs", snacks, beer and drinks. After the round of golf there is a one-hour premium open bar and hors d' oeuvre reception followed by a full buffet dinner and awards program, where trophies will be given out for championship, first and second flight, men's longest drive, women's longest drive, closest to the pin and closest to the pin second shot on the green. A 50/50 raffle prize winner will be awarded and over $2,000 in prizes will also be given away.

Chamber Seeking Restaurants or Catering Facilities to Take Part in the 12th Annual Tastes of Greater Hazleton

The Community Awareness Committee of the Greater Hazleton of Commerce is currently looking for any restaurant or catering facility to participate in the 12th Annual Tastes of Greater Hazleton. The event features a sampling of signature dishes and products from restaurants and businesses from throughout Greater Hazleton.

It is scheduled to take place Sunday, October 13th from 12:00 noon to 3:00 pm at the Laurel Mall in Hazleton.

The opportunity is open to any restaurant or catering facility from throughout Greater Hazleton. There is no registration fee for Chamber member businesses and a one-time offer to non Chamber members of $150, however if the business would join the Chamber by the date of the event, the cost could be credited toward Chamber membership.

Each participating business is asked to provide a tasting, approximately 300 samples, to each of the individuals who attend the event. Businesses are provided with all paper products for the event. The goal of this event is to show off one of your signature dishes and promote and market your restaurant to a wide audience. This also gives the residents of Greater Hazleton a look at the excellent variety of restaurants that are located right in their own backyard.

2019 Season of the Downtown Hazleton Farmer’s Market Will Open Friday, July 12

Downtown Hazleton Farmers MarketThe Downtown Hazleton Farmer's Market and Health Fair will kick off its eighth year on Friday, July 12th and continue every Friday through September 6th. The market hours will be 10:00 AM – 2:00 PM. A weekly Health Fair will again be held in conjunction with the market, which will include several health practitioners offering free health screenings and educational information on health and wellness, such as spinal screenings, blood pressure screenings, dental health information, and nutrition and exercise information.

The market and health fair will take place along Broad Street at the corner of Laurel Street. A ribbon cutting will take place on Friday, July 12th at 10:15 AM with Mayor Cusat and other special guests to celebrate the market opening. The Chamber of Commerce operates the market with the support of the Downtown Hazleton Alliance for Progress and the Keystone Job Corps. Sponsors of the 2019 market include the Geisinger Foundation and the Luzerne County Convention and Visitors Bureau.

Weekly vendors will include Burger’s Farm (fresh farm produce), Sugar & Loaf Bakery (artisanal and specialty baked goods), Keiner’s Nursery & Apiary (honey and honey products), the Commission on Economic Opportunity (healthy cooking demonstrations), and the Keystone Job Corps (educational programs). Special guests, vendors, and health care providers will also participate each week.

Chamber Women’s Networking Committee Announces Applications Are Available for Women’s Empowerment Grant

The Greater Hazleton Chamber of Commerce Women’s Networking committee is currently seeking applications for the twelfth annual Women’s Empowerment Grant. This grant was established to encourage women to pursue training or education that will help them start or advance a career. The target of the grant is women who are: currently working and want to advance in their career through education or training; returning to the workforce; and/or seeking to change their current career path and pursue something more in line with their interests or passions. The grant is also intended to be available to those who would not necessarily have access to scholarships or grants. For this reason, graduating high school students will not be eligible to apply for the grant.

Candidates must reside within the service area of the Greater Hazleton Chamber of Commerce, which includes anyone who resides within the Hazleton Area School District. Applications and cover letters are due no later than July 31st, 2019 with an anticipated August 31st notification. All applications will be scored on the following areas: Academic Information, Employment Information, Civic Involvement, Essay and Financial Need.

Icebreaker Golf OutingThe two-man team comprised of Jared Gregor and Darren Evanoff from Adecco took the Chamber’s championship flight award during the Greater Hazleton Chamber of Commerce 15th Annual Icebreaker Golf Outing Friday, April 26th at Eagle Rock Resort in Hazleton.

Other winners in the tournament were: First Flight representing MassMutual Eastern PA, Ron Mead and Rob Glycenfer. Second Flight representing Kazimierz Pulaski Club, John Wisdo and Tom Piscura.

Longest Drive award was won by Jared Gregor from Adecco. Longest putt award was won by John Tunnessen from DBi Services. And closest to the pin award was won by Darren Evanoff from Adecco.

Chamber Mixer Taking Place on Wednesday

LCBC Church MixerA special Chamber Networking mixer is taking place on Wednesday, May 22nd from 5 pm to 7 pm at LCBC Church, located at 760 Airport Road in Hazle Township (the former Hollywood Diner). Chamber members can invite their employees, co-workers and guests to the event, which is free to attend and offers a casual, after-hours networking opportunity for the business community.
